What you need

  • A dedicated Linux server or virtual machine running Ubuntu or Debian, x86-64
  • Root access to run the installer

Recommended server size

Size the server for the number of sensors you plan to monitor. Use solid-state disks.

SensorsCPU coresMemoryDisk
Up to 50044 GB100 GB
Up to 1,00066 GB500 GB
Up to 2,50088 GB750 GB
Up to 5,000812 GB1 TB
Up to 10,0001216 GB1.5 TB

With high availability, give every server in the cluster the same size. For more than 10,000 sensors, contact sales@tarleynode.com.

Firewall and network access

Your TarleyNode server needs outbound HTTPS (TCP 443) to these addresses. Without them, licence checks and updates fail.

AddressUsed for
license.tarleynode.comLicence activation, trials and licence refresh
updates.tarleynode.comUpdate checks, downloads, support packs, feedback and release notes
www.tarleynode.comRelease notes (/releases/<version>.txt) when the update address is unavailable

These addresses are served through Cloudflare, so allow them by name rather than by IP address, which can change. TarleyNode never needs inbound access from us.

TarleyNode checks its licence every day. If that check is blocked, the console shows a warning naming the address after about a day. After 30 days without a check, monitoring and alerts keep running, but you cannot add devices, sensors or users or install updates. A server that cannot reach the licence server cannot start a trial and stays on the free edition.

Incoming SNMP traps

To receive SNMP traps, allow inbound UDP 162 to the TarleyNode server and to each connected site, ideally only from the subnets your devices are on. Captured SNMPv3 traps can be replayed, so keep this port closed to everything else.

Only if you use the feature

  • Phone notifications: fcm.googleapis.com, *.push.apple.com, updates.push.services.mozilla.com, *.notify.windows.com
  • Alerts: Your mail server, events.pagerduty.com, api.telegram.org (Telegram), api.twilio.com (SMS), and your webhook, Slack and Teams addresses
  • Microsoft 365 and Azure: login.microsoftonline.com, graph.microsoft.com, management.azure.com
  • AWS: ec2.<region>.amazonaws.com, monitoring.<region>.amazonaws.com
  • Zyxel Nebula: api.nebula.zyxel.com (UniFi checks stay on your network)
  • Single sign-on: Your identity provider
  • During installation: download.docker.com (if the installer installs Docker) and Docker Hub

Install

Check the download matches its published checksum, then install it:

sha256sum tarleynode_0.3.3_amd64.deb
sudo apt install ./tarleynode_0.3.3_amd64.deb

The installer sets everything up and prints the address to open. To create the first administrator, get the one-time setup code with:

sudo tarleynode setup-code

Updates then install from the console whenever an administrator chooses.
