Proxmox monitoring with TarleyNode

TarleyNode monitors Proxmox through Proxmox Datacenter Manager, which gives it every node, virtual machine, container, storage and Backup Server datastore of every remote. It can also read Proxmox VE directly, in beta, which adds cluster quorum and backup job results. Both use a read-only API token.

What it checks

  • Proxmox Datacenter Manager remotes fails when Datacenter Manager cannot reach a remote, and names it.
  • A check per remote also fails when one of its nodes is offline.
  • Every node, virtual machine, container, storage and Backup Server datastore of every remote, listed under Sensors to tick and named by its remote first, such as lab/pve1. Nodes and storage are monitored automatically.
  • With automatic discovery on, every new virtual machine and container is monitored by itself.
  • Proxmox VE (beta): nodes, virtual machines and containers, storage, cluster health with quorum, and backup job results.

Set up Proxmox Datacenter Manager

  1. In Datacenter Manager, open Configuration › Access Control. Add a user, such as monitor in the Proxmox Datacenter Manager (pdm) realm, then an API token for it, such as tarleynode. Copy the secret: it is shown once.
  2. Under Permissions, give both the user and the token the Auditor role on /. It can only read.
  3. In TarleyNode, open Discovery › Credential profiles, choose Add and pick Proxmox Datacenter Manager · API token. Enter the Token ID, such as monitor@pdm!tarleynode, and the Token secret.
  4. Optionally pin the certificate’s SHA-256 fingerprint; otherwise tick Accept the server’s own certificate on the check.
  5. Add the Datacenter Manager as a device with that login, then add a Proxmox Datacenter Manager remotes check on port 8443.

Proxmox VE directly (beta)

For quorum and backup job results, which Datacenter Manager does not report, create an API token in Proxmox VE for a user with the PVEAuditor role and save it as a Proxmox VE · API token (beta) login. Add the Proxmox server as a device and add one check, such as Proxmox VE node (beta). Its nodes, virtual machines, containers and storage are then listed under Sensors to tick.

Questions

Is Proxmox monitoring finished or in beta?

Proxmox Datacenter Manager monitoring is released, and the Proxmox VE checks are in beta.

Does TarleyNode need write access to Proxmox?

No. Datacenter Manager needs only the Auditor role and Proxmox VE (beta) the PVEAuditor role, and both can only read.

Where are the Proxmox readings stored?

On your own TarleyNode server, like every other reading. Monitoring results and credentials are never routed through a TarleyNode cloud service.

Does it cover Proxmox Backup Server?

Through Datacenter Manager, yes: every Backup Server datastore of every remote is listed under Sensors to tick, alongside the remotes’ nodes, virtual machines, containers and storage.

Are new virtual machines picked up?

Yes. With automatic discovery on, every new virtual machine and container is monitored by itself.

Can I monitor the Proxmox hosts’ hardware too?

Yes, separately. Add a server’s iDRAC or iLO with an SNMP login, and TarleyNode applies its template for temperatures, fans, power supplies, disks and RAID.
